Dr. Thomas Keens Elected to the Board of Directors of the American Board of Pediatrics
The pediatric pulmonologist at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles will serve a three-year term, representing pediatric subspecialties
LOS ANGELES – Thomas G. Keens, M.D., a pediatric pulmonologist at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and a professor of pediatrics, physiology and biophysics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the American Board of Pediatrics at its annual meeting last month in Quebec City.
Dr. Keens is currently finishing a six-year term on the American Board of Pediatrics sub-board for pediatric pulmonology, where he has served as chair for the past two years. The sub-board chairs of the pediatric subspecialties meet annually to elect their representatives to the board of directors of the American Board of Pediatrics, and Dr. Keens was elected to represent the interests of subspecialties in pediatrics for the next three years.
Dr. Keens has been involved in the education of medical students, pediatric residents and pediatric subspecialty fellows during his 31-year career at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. He is vice chair of the Childrens Hospital Institute for Medical Education (CHIME), and he focuses his efforts on the education of pediatric subspecialty fellows who will become the future academic leaders of pediatric medicine.
Dr. Keens directs the CHIME core curriculum on scholarship skills, which trains all Childrens Hospital Los Angeles fellows in research methodology and proficiency in teaching.
Dr. Keens completed a fellowship in medical education at the University of Southern California (2004-2007). He is the program director for the Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship Training Program at Childrens Hospital. He teaches a number of courses in biological and biomedical sciences at USC to medical students, pharmacy students and graduate students.
Dr. Keens primary areas of interest in research are sudden infant death syndrome, disorders of ventilatory control and respiratory physiology in children. The American Board of Pediatrics, founded in 1933, was established to set standards of training and knowledge for physicians who treat infants, children and adolescents. The purpose is to assure the public that those physicians who are board certified as pediatricians have all met the same high standards of training and knowledge.
"Over the years, the challenges have changed," Dr. Keens said. "Not only are there now a number of pediatric subspecialties, such as neonatology, pediatric pulmonary and pediatric cardiology, but the extent of medical knowledge has exploded so that pediatricians must engage in life-long learning in order to remain competent."
Dr. Keens received a bachelor's degree from St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico (1968), and a medical degree from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine (1972).
He completed his internship and residency at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (1972-75), and he completed a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology at the Research Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada (1975-77). Dr. Keens completed a fellowship in medical education at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (2004-2007).
Dr. Keens has served as a peer reviewer for more than 20 professional journals, including the Journal of Applied Physiology, Science, the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Pediatrics, and the European Journal of Pediatrics.
Dr. Keens has authored more than 440 articles, abstracts and peer-reviewed publications, and been an invited lecturer both nationally and internationally.
Founded in 1901, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles has been treating the most seriously ill and injured children in Los Angeles for more than a century, and it is acknowledged throughout the United States and around the world for its leadership in pediatric and adolescent health. Childrens Hospital is one of America's premier teaching hospitals, affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California since 1932. It is a national leader in pediatric research. Since 1990, U.S. News & World Report and its panel of board-certified pediatricians have named Childrens Hospital Los Angeles one of the top pediatric facilities in the nation, and it is ranked among the Top 10 children's hospitals in the country – and first among the 13 children's hospitals in California – in the current magazine rankings.
